Unfortunately, no.<\/p><p>During this hospitalization, Gabriel contracted three hospital-acquired infections. He spent 90 days intubated, four months in intensive care, and had to be placed on ECMO (artificial lung) for five days to survive.<\/p><p>After five months in the hospital, Gabriel was able to return home on September 24, 2025, with a diagnosis of <strong>post-infectious bronchiolitis obliterans<\/strong>, accompanied by <strong>significant motor delay<\/strong>.<\/p><p>It is a <strong>rare chronic disease that destroys the small airways.<\/strong><\/p><p>Today, Gabriel <strong>depends on oxygen<\/strong>, uses a <strong>non-invasive ventilation machine<\/strong> daily, and is fed via a <strong>gastric tube<\/strong>.<\/p><p>The <strong>good news<\/strong> is that he is still a baby. If he receives the necessary care and does not contract any infections during the next two years, his lungs can still create new respiratory passages. This could allow him, one day, to breathe without assistance.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-6771cd5 elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"6771cd5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-030bf59 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"030bf59\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Why are we asking for help?<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a7cab20 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a7cab20\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>We have private health insurance that we have been paying for two years, and we are in good standing.<\/p><p>Yet, despite official prescriptions from several specialists (pulmonologist, pediatrician, speech therapist, physiotherapists, nutritionist, neurologist), <strong>the insurance continues to refuse a large portion of the essential care<\/strong> Gabriel needs.<\/p><p>The case has been submitted to national mediation. The procedure is ongoing, but it may take several months.<\/p><p>In the meantime, <strong>we are doing everything to give Gabriel the best chances to develop<\/strong>. Thanks to your donations, here&#8217;s where we stand.<\/p>\n<p>His breathing is stable.<\/p>\n<p>Even better: since April 4th, he no longer needs oxygen. The non-invasive ventilation is still in place and the routine continues: motor physiotherapy, respiratory physiotherapy, nebulizers, Powerbreath.<\/p>\n<p>On the feeding side, things are more complicated.<\/p>\n<p>The feeding tube was removed in December 2025, but gaining weight remains a daily battle.<\/p>\n<p>Motor physiotherapy and occupational therapy are paying off.<\/p>\n<p>He&#8217;s gradually catching up on the motor delay caused by his six months in hospital.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A strict sanitary protocol<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The pulmonologist detected what may be the early signs of bronchiectasis on his latest scan. In practical terms, his bronchi remain fragile and the slightest respiratory infection could tip the situation. We therefore have to protect him from any respiratory virus for several more years. This means a strict sanitary protocol at home: no exposed outings, filtered visits, reinforced hygiene, social life reduced to a minimum. It&#8217;s a heavy daily constraint, but it&#8217;s the price to pay to preserve his lungs and keep him out of hospital.<\/p>\n<p><strong>On the coverage side<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The supplementary insurance policies we signed up for are finally starting to release some payments. Coverage remains partial (around 40% on certain treatments), and the bulk of expenses continues to weigh on our budget.<\/p>\n<p>Our original insurance no longer covers anything, since we made the decision to go home.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Beyond Gabriel<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;re broadening the association&#8217;s mission. Funding Gabriel&#8217;s care remains our priority, but we also want to raise awareness of bronchiolitis obliterans, a rare and still poorly documented disease.<\/p>\n<p>Several projects have already taken shape around the association:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/bocommunity.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bocommunity.org<\/a>: a community platform built by patients and their families, to share resources, experiences and mutual support around this disease.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/lescolsdusouffle.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lescolsdusouffle.com<\/a>: a sporting challenge launched by Gabriel&#8217;s grandfather this coming August. Major sponsors and several influencers are already backing the project.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>More initiatives will follow.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What hasn&#8217;t changed<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>His illness remains chronic.
